Navigating Above the Woods: A Contemporary Translation of the Yangzhou Spirit
Situated along Yangzhou’s Grand Canal, the design translates millennium-old water transport culture into a contemporary spatial experience, taking "a courier boat drifting above the trees" as its core imagery. Facing a row of century-old weeping willows, we strategically elevated the main volume to nine meters. The design elevates the main building to 9 meters, allowing interior views to extend beyond the tree, fully embrace the water. Viewed from the opposite bank, the structure hovers like a light skiff, forging a restrained yet distinct localized romance.
A large cantilevered steel structure presents a pure aesthetic while realizing low-carbon construction. Lifting the volume liberates a porous, stilted plaza below. Broad steps naturally transform into an urban grandstand, where exhibitions, dining, and public markets organically intertwine. Ultimately, the project dissolves the physical boundaries of a traditional exhibition hall. It evolves into a breathable, deeply humane micro-community—allowing the canal landscape, ancient trees, and modern public life to gently and symbiotically coexist.
