The project is located in Zhouqian Ancient Village, Shaoguan—a settlement founded in 1771 with 12,000 square meters of historic architecture. It sits on the ruins of a Hakka walled building, originally a fortified residence. After 250 years, only crumbling walls remain. The design transforms the site into a small art gallery, preserving its cultural heritage while introducing new life. Instead of restoring the original form, the design embraces the site's "ruin" quality. Light, shadow, and sound animate the remnants, evoking memory and vitality. Visitors move along a narrow outdoor passage, encountering artworks at varying elevations. An inverted pyramid-shaped structure connects the outdoor space to a underground gallery, with a climbable tiled roof merging into the old walls. Sunlight filters through gaps, reflecting onto a pool of water and into the cubic gallery. A semi-underground outdoor area leads to a north gallery of exposed concrete and glass, framing views of ancient textures and nature. The original structure is preserved with minimal intervention, leveraging the walled building’s enclosed spaces, raw materials, and filtered light in an evocative, contemporary way.
