Diffusive Habitats is an autonomous, adaptable architectural system that reimagines the way we conceive and inhabit architecture. Addressing the ecological crisis and the linear lifecycle of conventional construction, the project offers a responsive, sustainable alternative modeled on the adaptability of natural systems. Users co-create habitats through an online AI-enhanced platform, which are then built and continuously reconfigured by a swarm of collaborative robots. These habitats evolve over time—adapting to seasonal changes, cultural events, or emerging community needs—fostering shared ownership and dynamic spatial agency. Altogether, the system merges participatory design, custom robotic assembly, and deep multi-agent reinforcement learning, creating a living environment capable of self-assessment, organization, and improvement. Diffusive Habitats was successfully deployed in a case-study located in Herme Hill Road, Brixton, London, and featured at the 2023 ACADIA Conference for its groundbreaking contributions to computational design in architecture.
