Description
This installation is set in the Art Deco–era Peiwen Apartments, once home to the historic Shanghai Women’s Department Store. During renovations, over a thousand glass columns—once part of rain canopies that shielded and refracted sunlight—were uncovered. Using new media technology, the artist transforms these remnants into a living language of light and sound. By collecting and translating the voices of Shanghai women into shifting light patterns, the work traces a century-long spiritual journey.
The artist captured field recordings across the city: hawkers’ calls, laughter and mahjong in alleyways, heels in metro stations, chatter in commercial streets, whispers in teahouses, and opera rehearsals. These fragments were sculpted into new compositions that echo the city’s soul. Through algorithms, oscillators, water vibrations, and refracted light, sound becomes halos of light—fluid, flickering patterns rippling across space. This meditative interplay of memory, architecture, and atmosphere pays tribute to the enduring, ever-changing stories of women in Shanghai’s urban life.
