The project is located in Yongning Ancient Town, Yanqing District, Beijing, adjacent to the town’s central landmark, Yuhuang belvedere .Before renovation, it was a long-abandoned courtyard tucked away in a backstreet, featuring a traditional five-bay architectural style. The yard had been neglected for years, overgrown with weeds—except for a thriving crabapple tree planted by the owner decades ago. The client, a long-time resident of Yongning Ancient Town, intends to transform this space into a multi-generational home for his family. To meet the independent needs of three generations, we transformed the original five-bay building into three separate courtyard suites. And the crabapple tree planted by the master of the house was incorporated into his own private courtyard. A screen wall is placed at the entrance, while the family living room, kitchen, and rooftop terrace are arranged around the courtyard. The corner space in the northwest serves as the lady’s vegetable garden. besides, the rooftop terrace was originally the roof of a street-side shop. By adding a staircase, it has been transformed into a perfect spot for cooling off and gatherings.
