Description
Urban development today often means demolishing the existing. In China, rapid modernization has led to the loss of thousands of structures, causing major cultural loss and environmental challenges from demolition waste, much of which ends up in landfills or incinerators. This project addresses long-standing waste management issues by adopting adaptive reuse, seeking a new architectural typology for the new city of Xiong’an.
By combining a power plant with the reuse of an old manufacturing building as a research facility, the design becomes both a part of the city's transformation and a lasting model for future urban development. The layering of the power plant's components atop the existing structure enhances its expressive character and draws attention from local residents. The open display of the power plant’s workings turns the project into a dynamic showroom, promoting a new vision for architecture and urban planning in China.
