Description
Winner of “Hello, Island” competition, the Seaside Pavilion reimagines the traditional “village gateway tree” at Chaishan Island’s abandoned dock. Covering 75 square meters and 7 meters tall, its steel frame and 36 fishing-rope blades sway with the breeze, creating a romantic ambiance. This public space offers rest and connection for locals and tourists, boosting Chaishan’s tourism revival.
Located at a 1960s dock near the new terminal, the pavilion blends “poetic realism” with village heritage and modern design. Steel, ropes, and cables support porous blades, dynamically tuned for a 1.5-meter sway that echoes ocean waves. A wind-driven system, replacing tidal power, suits brief visits and endured a Category 12 typhoon. Durable rope blades nod to fishing culture; steel platforms, fixed with chemical anchors, preserve the site.
Restoring the boardwalk, the pavilion upholds the “welcoming dock” tradition as a fishing and sightseeing landmark. As the art district’s starting point, it draws artists and tourists, uplifting local businesses. Community involvement in construction fosters unity. Its innovative design sets a model for island revitalization, embodying “poetic realism.”
