A Crescent on a House
Description
This project is a cultural welfare center for farmers in Anjwa-myeon, Shinan-gun, where nine islands were connected to the mainland with the opening of Cheonsa Bridge in 2019. As part of broader cultural welfare initiatives, the project responds to Anjwa’s cultural significance as the birthplace of artist Kim Hwan-ki and pansori master Lee Young-tae. Within strict agricultural land regulations, a flexible village hall was proposed, capable of hosting performances. Surrounded by rice fields and hills, the building’s crescent-shaped form echoes the landscape and serves as a natural backdrop for outdoor events. The bar-shaped first floor emphasizes horizontality and avoids cantilever regulations, creating a "crescent moon on a house" rising toward the sea. The interior multipurpose hall flexibly transforms: a playground, marketplace, or performance hall, with retractable stages and seating. <A Crescent on a House> seeks to create a new type of farmers' center, revitalizing local culture through flexible spaces and fresh architectural expression in a declining rural area.
