Description
The Sunlight Theater is located on Shengshan Island, the easternmost inhabited island of China's Zhoushan Archipelago, perched on a cliffside atop a century-old fishing ground. This innovative project blends architecture with a land art installation, designed to attract vibrant performances and tourists, fostering economic growth and enriching the lives of islanders.
The theater’s design strategically manages sightlines through undulating edges, shielding audiences from surrounding distractions to create a serene experience enveloped by sky, sea, and stage. A 1:1 ratio of stage diameter to audience seating depth ensures optimal audiovisual quality in an open-air setting. With 70% of the structure cantilevered, the design preserves the historic ship-drying yard beneath, which doubles as a community viewpoint for sunrise and a cultural gathering space.
Spanning approximately 260 square meters, this open venue is poised to become a must-visit destination in the Zhoushan Archipelago, serving as a model for cultural and tourism-driven public architecture. The Sunlight Theater not only celebrates the island’s heritage but also catalyzes its economic revitalization.
